How to Restore Rattan Furniture

How to Restore Rattan Furniture?

Rattan furniture is comprised of sections made from woven strands of rattan, a climbing species of palm. Rattan is similar to wicker and the care and restoration of both is much the same. Rattan furniture can be cleaned, repainted or rewoven. Natural colored rattan is coated in a film of boiled linseed oil that is painted or sprayed on and absorbed by the rattan reeds.

Instructions
Cleaning Rattan

1.Tilt the piece of rattan furniture at an angle so water and cleaning solutions will drain off quickly. Trim the bristles of a paintbrush to about half their original length and use this to brush as much dust and dirt off the rattan as possible.

2.Dip the trimmed paintbrush into a mild soap and water solution and brush on the rattan, getting it into the areas between the woven strands. Work from the top of the furniture down. Do not disturb the weave of the rattan while wet or when it dries there will be gaps in the weaving. Scrub any stubborn or stained areas with a vegetable brush.

3.Rinse the cleaning solution off the rattan with clean water and dry with soft cloths or paper towels and allow to air dry.

Repairing Rattan Furniture
4.Check the joints in the furniture fame for tightness. Any loose joints will need to be re-glued. Work the glue down into the joints with a sharpened dowel rod or use a glue injection needle. Use a clamp or length of rope tied around the joint to hold it in place while the glue dries.

5.Repair loose joints in larger pieces of rattan furniture with screws. Drill a pilot hole smaller in diameter than the screw being used. Fill the hole with glue and insert the screw. Do not over tighten.

6.Replace damaged weaving by weaving in new rattan. Study the pattern of the weaving and make notes and diagrams or take photos of the pattern. Practice weaving by building a small wooden frame out of scrap lumber and use the same size of rattan reed that will be used on the actual piece of furniture.

Refinishing Rattan Furniture
7.Thoroughly clean painted rattan furniture using the steps above and allow to dry. Spray with primer and allow to dry. Do not brush the primer on, as a brush will cause too much build up in the woven pattern.

8.Spray on one to two coats of finish paint and allow to dry.

9.Natural finish rattan should be cleaned and sprayed with a clear coat of finish. Any discolored areas can be touched up with oil stain before the clear finish is applied. Polyurethane is not recommended as the finish dries very hard and will crack.

10.Natural finish rattan that has not been clear coated, should be cleaned and sprayed with a light film of boiled linseed oil and allowed to dry.
